In July 2017, award-winning indie game Alto’s Adventure became the first mobile game to let players natively purchase physical merchandise through an in-game gift shop. With this new revenue channel, its developer Snowman doubled 2016 merchandise revenue in the first 2 months after launch.
From knitted llamas to touques, physical products authentic to Alto’s universe were made available in the new “Alto’s Gift Shop”, alongside the existing in-game digital store. This case study is the beginning of an industry-wide shift where, for the first time, physical products will be integrated directly into gaming experiences where digital goods are the norm.
Our talk will be about the future of video games using physical products to bridge the gap between gaming and the real world, and what that means for a game developer’s ability to build their brand and create compelling experiences to engage a community of players.
